Encountered same problem: gnome-system-monitor shows up and closes again after few seconds. This only happens if there is a gnome-terminal open. system-monitor seems to need a icon file called Terminal.svg (upper case T), which is not available, but terminal.svg (lower case) is. After creating symlink system-monitor works again. I recently removed package xfce4-terminal, which holds the upper case Terminal.svg file, which system-monitor now seems to miss.
