For the Lay user:

Hit  Ctrl+alt+f1 to get to terminal
Login as yourself
sudo chmod a+rwx /tmp

This problem is pretty serious since it totally prevents you from
logging in. I did a sudo apt-get upgrade before finding this bug report
and making the changes and even that didn't fix the problem. Let's not
lock the lay user out of their system eh?
