Sorry for the lack of response. I was in the final months of my Engineering degree when i filed the bug, leaving me little time to do the necessary investigation. I have since installed a machine with the latest copy of Ubuntu Karmic and the problem has not recurred. It appears to have been some sort of temporary regression or glitch in the Karmic Beta.
