Correct; the screen does a proper power off (as does the external
monitor) followed by powering back on in response to user input for
about twelve hours after the X session is started. Once the problem
begins, the only way to restore the correct screen power off behaviour
is to completely restart the X session (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart).
I've just noticed in the last day or so that having the power management
display sleep value be less than the screen saver blank period seems to
delay the onset of the issue.
