Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

No headphone output in Ubuntu 9.10 (Gnome) on an HP Compaq nx6110
notebook (fresh install).

Was working previously in Ubuntu 9.04 (xfce) on same system.

I remember that I previously had to check a box in the mixer to enable
the headphone switch, but I can't now find any option resembling that
anywhere in gnome-volume-control.
