OK just want to update--this seems to be working for me now. I don't
know what could have changed that fixed this, but here is what changed

None of that looks like it would be the reason, but maybe something in there 
fixed this for me. Maybe it was something else. I am currently running with 
power management disabled under xscreensaver--gnome-power-manager seems to be 
working as intended now.
