More information:
This is the message I get when I try to lock the screen in command line:
$ gnome-screensaver-command --activate
** Message: Screensaver is not running!
$ gnome-screensaver-command --lock
** Message: Screensaver is not running!

If I start the screensaver using this command:
gnome-screensaver
The command: $ gnome-screensaver-command --lock
now locks the screen, but the lock menu in the user applet do nothing.
