After installing some updates today, the bug resurfaced directly from boot. Nautilus did load, but again the panels were dead. Switched to VT to check network and loopback configuration, they were correct. Pings to the outside world were successful. I was also able to ssh into remote boxes as well ping the localhost. Ifconfig showed both eth0 and lo configured correctly, a dhclient of eth0 was successful.
