Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Randomly metacity seems to go crazy and doesn't manage anymore focus
correctly. Like it gives mouse and keyboard events to only one window
(in some cases even showing as unfocused) and there is no way to give
focus to something else. This has been happened randomly but with a
constant repetition (since i installed karmic already 5 times and it's
only 2 days) some times it fixed by itself by clicking around without
reasoning but most of the times the only way to fix this was kill the
entire x server. reloading metacity from a tty usually allows to give
focus to a different window but then it's locked again. A note this
happens for sure with compositing disabled (and no compiz) and it's
extremely annoying. one time i had even the mouse grabbed by a game
clicking around with it (even in the same position of where was xchat
gave the event to the game behind) and the keyboard by xchat

Unfortunately i can't provide a reproduction step by step procedure as i can't
figure out what is really triggering it... maybe fast movements... a note alt
tab seems to not be working too in this case (but maybe this is a side effect
of another bug which i see in the bug tracker which seems to be triggered by
this).
I use the nvidia drivers if it does matter
