This is apparently fixed by http://cgit.freedesktop.org/gstreamer/gst- plugins-ugly/commit/?id=3784de031dd4c6eaa3af94cf16c83e48df780264 . I hope this patch makes it into Ubuntu 9.10 but given the timing I suspect this is unlikely.
