Steve, on my U100, killing hald-addon-generic-backlight doesn't seem to affect anything. I tried creating the file you mentioned in #42 as well (added a ">" to line six), but that didn't seem to change anything, either. The screen still flickers whenever gnome-power-manager is running and I change the brightness.
