Neither of these fixed it for me (even with logout or reboot): remove/rename ~/.local/share/mime/ update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime/
But this did fix it: remove/rename /usr/local/share/mime -- gThumb do not show any pictures in directories, although the fact that they are there.
