What I meant was (and remember that I have never put an eye in GDM code) that if we can use he old configuration tool graphics as a base for building the ew configuration tool, it would help users in understanding how to work with the config tool. What worries me is the fact that if old GDM and new GDM are not compatible even in the config tool, there will be a not-so-small problem in porting GDM login screens, etc. I saw my custom login screens disappear one day after an uprade, replaced by the standard GDM login screen; that worried me. BTW, I had reported it as a new bug (bug #395770), but it was marked as a duplicate of this...
