Exactly the same issue here, after using eog with no problems at all for a few years. I don't know what the trigger was, but it started after viewing a directory with many jpg files with the collections display on. >From that point the same "Did not receive a reply" error when starting in the terminal and failure to start after a long delay in Nautilus.
