Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The new GDM (2.26.1-0ubuntu3) fails to start for me (I just get a black
screen with the busy cursor). It appears the new GDM will fail to start
if gnome-session is not installed per /var/log/gdm/:0-slave.log:

gdm-simple-slave[3016]: WARNING: Could not spawn command: Failed to execute
child process "/usr/bin/gnome-session" (No such file or directory)
gdm-simple-slave[3016]: WARNING: Could not start command
'/usr/bin/gnome-session --autostart=/usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/':
Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/gnome-session" (No such file or
directory)

Naturally since I'm running Xubuntu, gnome-session is not installed.

Is gnome-session really required or is this a configuration issue with
the new gdm?
