This is not evolution per se, it's the gtk+gnome file selector dialogue.

As such it makes parts of the GNOME desktop largely unusable
so I suggest moving it to gtk+ and raising the priority of this bug.

I'm seeing this bug too (see attachment), but eg firefox has it too.
You need to type a file name which has multiple possible completions
(eg ~/000 if you have any GIT patches laying around).

Here's a sequence to crash evolution

    cd
    touch 0000 0001
    evolution --force-shutdown
    evolution --component mail # wait for and focus it
    C-n C-M 0000

it crashes when attemting to type the fourth 0.

And here's how to crash firefox

    cd
    touch 0000 0001
    killall -9 firefox
    firefox # wait for and focus it
    C-o 0000

it crashes when attemting to type the fourth 0.
