@Conn: Sometimes it leads to a mess on desktop, but sometimes it doesn't. It 
depends on how you organize your files. I'm not saying that this idea is 
completely without sense, but I think that some people would like to download 
files directly to their desktops.
I suppose that changes in usability should make everybody happy (if possible), 
so (again) I propose making an GUI app for configuring dirs. It would be useful 
in configuring dir for e.g. Photos, too.

I realize that "new" OSs (Vista, 7) have such a dir. I used to use them,
and that's the reason why I'm writing these words.

(Firefox 3 uses Downloads folder, both in Vista and 7, as well as
Chrome, but the latter uses the wrong one - maybe it has problems with
i18n?)
