I nominated this for the one hundred paper cuts project. When I first heard about the project, this was the bug I instantly was reminded of: it's bugged and annoyed me for well over three releases now and it still isn't fixed. I want to rely on gnome panel autohiding, but this way it is impossible. For now I work around it by manually hiding the panel, but this is a workaround at best.
