I'm having a similar issue with Evince. It's quite weird though, I seem to always get this error if the Evince window is out of focus, but if I keep the window in focus it works. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but that's been my experience so far. I'm trying to print multiple pages from a PDF, but not all pages and the printer is on another Ubuntu computer shared using Samba.
