Hi! I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.29.4, but this problem with the lid is still present. I'm still researching the precise situation, but sometimes my hp 2140 behaves correctly when I close the lid, in my case that's means that the machine goes in standby. The only thing that I noticed is that happens after a forced switch off. In fact sometimes my Hp 2140 hangs on the login splash with the keyboard and the mouse blocked, then I force the reboot by holding the power button. When I restart the machine, the machine behaves correctly and gnome-power works perfectly.
I've also noticed what Jeremy has pointed out, also when the machine behaves correctly, it doesn't resume when I open the lid.
