You have been subscribed to a public bug: Startup Applications (gnome-session-properties) doesn't offer a list of installed applications when I click 'Add', and instead I have to guess at the name of the binary or navigate the filesystem. With a list I would get immediate feedback that I have added the application I want. I get an icon and description automagically. Lists are used in other places in GNOME, including the 'Open With...' dialog and adding a launcher to the panel.
