David: I think your bug is subtely different to the one described here. If you wish to follow up on it I would suggest filing a seperate bug report. It is probably worth testing your machine with the fglrx drivers completely removed (perhaps by blacklisting the driver). This will let your rule out your binary driver as the cause of the problem.
