To be honest I don't think there is an issue with the current way. The issue might be for people to notice the difference, but when they know where the notification are is there is no issue. Some graphical change could make easier to notice first but then you would have it in the way all the time which is not nice neither. I'm not really an UI guy neither and forwarding that without real change suggestion upstream has no real interested probably...
