Don't turn this into a Windows vs Linux battle. 
Just fix the damm bug. 

The volume format shouldn't matter. 
You start changing the mount options to fix this problem, you're going to break 
something else.

Why isn't the trashcan user-neutral or user-specific or whatever works
here?
