Well, best thing for fixing is to mark it against Ubuntu :) . I don't know, Totem works fine in previous Ubuntu versions with Overlay output. It flickers but it works if the progress bars appeared.
It seems to be a gstreamer problem since the gstreamer-properties testing output shows the same behavior. If you move a window over it the place doesn't get refreshed.
