Bug has been solved: Some old libs (glib, etc.) had been installed in /usr/local/lib/ and these have been used instead of the new correct ones in /usr/lib/. This had been necessary in Ubuntu 8.04 to run vmware server.
After deleting the libs in /usr/local/ everything went smooth.
