Thanks for the report, that's a known issue and it's a compiz one,
you're searching for the wrong gconf component though , metacity is the
window manager that you run when you set the desktop effects to "None"
that's why it doesn't work setting those that way either since you're
running compiz. marking this as dup of bug 150918, thanks.
