I think my "newness" is showing. Considering your explanation, I realize that tools in the GNU/Linux community are more explicit and probably more powerful than I am accustomed to. It would not have occurred to me to use parenthesis for -6 squared.
To the question about (6+5)^2, I would have probably entered 11 squared on the Calculator. This may be a case of educating the user (me) about the operation of the tool and higher math. Seems I can't defend this as a bug because there may be many ways to accomplish the task.
