This sounds very strange and might be bordering on a hardware bug (e.g. disk is about to fail) but it's hard to say without being able to see things first hand. I would suggest disabling the "pretty" BIOS splash screen from the BIOS (so _keep_ tapping (you can't just hold it down) F2 as the eeepc starts until it goes to the BIOS setup) and read the startup messages to find out where BIOS was stalling...
