** Description changed: I have ubuntu 8.04 installed on my system. It has been running perfectly till 2 days before. From yesterday, the gdm is not started. I have checked in the forums and confirm that: dbus is at S12 and hal is at S24 and gdm is S30 in /etc/rc.* The problem seems to be that hal is not started. I takes a long time (around 3-5 minutes, previously it took few seconds only) and there were no [OK] for the hal daemon. Even I tried to manually start hal, but it is not to be started. pidof hal returns no pids. -- - Now I have upgraded my distribution by apt-get dist-upgrade, and now hal daemon is started correctly. But still, the gdmgreeter is not started.
