For further input, I discovered this problem after updating kernel from
the gentoo sources 2.6.25-gentoo-r7 to 2.6.27-gentoo-r8. Curiously
updating the kernel required me to update my nVIDIA driver from
173.14.12 to 180.22, as I could not install the 173 driver under the new
kernel, much less run X under it. Afterwards xchat saw fit to give me
this error, I ran across this page, booted back into the old kernel (Had
to install nvidia drivers 173 here because X would not run with 180
under the old kernel) and xchat booted just fine. This issue was indeed
transparency, but it only occurs under the new kernel and nVIDIA
drivers. Again,

Kernel: 2.6.27-gentoo-r8
nVIDIA: 180.22

Hope this helps.
