For further input, I discovered this problem after updating kernel from the gentoo sources 2.6.25-gentoo-r7 to 2.6.27-gentoo-r8. Curiously updating the kernel required me to update my nVIDIA driver from 173.14.12 to 180.22, as I could not install the 173 driver under the new kernel, much less run X under it. Afterwards xchat saw fit to give me this error, I ran across this page, booted back into the old kernel (Had to install nvidia drivers 173 here because X would not run with 180 under the old kernel) and xchat booted just fine. This issue was indeed transparency, but it only occurs under the new kernel and nVIDIA drivers. Again,
