Public bug reported: I have ubuntu 8.04 installed on my system. It has been running perfectly till 2 days before. From yesterday, the gdm is not started. I have checked in the forums and confirm that: dbus is at S12 and hal is at S24 and gdm is S30 in /etc/rc.*
The problem seems to be that hal is not started. I takes a long time (around 3-5 minutes, previously it took few seconds only) and there were no [OK] for the hal daemon. Even I tried to manually start hal, but it is not to be started. pidof hal returns no pids. P.S: Also, my eth0 is not detected. I am not able to use internet to post the logs from there. If information is provided regarding how to enable network from text mode, it will be fine to give more details from linux system. Currently I have to reboot the system to post the bugs.
