Hi there, The problem here was that I had only 1 root gnome-terminal and 1 user gnome-terminal available. I could obviously try and repeat this exact same process from a live cd and open up sever terminals previous to any sort of crash. I have altered the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file as described: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash.
I will see if there is anything to backtrace there. I am giving up for now. Next time when I upgrade my 8.10 rescue to jaunty (probably soon), I will try some of this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing. But please give me your advise too. Oh yeah, and I think the title of this bug should be changed to gdm- something. Reminder: the only useful debug info here is probably the strace, maybe strace attach pidof gdm (both gdm's) too? Thanks Pedro, Thomas -- gedit fails to run as root in jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/311237 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
