I had the same problem and solved it somehow: I added in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base (open with root access) following line at the bottom:
options snd-atiixp model=hp position_fix=1 enable=yes After restarting, the internal microphone as well as the plugged one worked exactly how you expect them to work.
