I can confirm this on my HP Mini 1000, though it's more in line with what 
Andrej Zirko mentioned in comment 5.  Unchecking "Reduce backlight brightness" 
and "Dim display when idle" under the battery tab in the Power Management 
Preferences fixes it, found here:
