I can confirm that this is still happening in Ubuntu 8.10. 1) In the normal gdm login screen, I select the "Secure Remote Connection" and then login to the local account. 2) Up pops a box saying "enter the name of the host you want to log in to". I enter the remote hostname. 3) My session starts up on the remote host. Everything works perfectly. 4) I click on the "Fast User Switch Applet" and select "Log out". Nothing appears to happen. 5) At this point I still have a desktop, and I can display menus but no applications will start. If I try to start a new terminal, I will get a "Starting Terminal" icon which goes away in a second or two. But not terminal is started. 6) Selecting System -> Log out USERNAME... instead of using the "Fast User Switch Applet" gives the same behavior.
