I'm getting something similar on a HP zd8000 with ATI Radeon x300. The system freezes when the screen saver is active, resulting in a slightly smeared display. No response from the system, however I can occasionally get the system to respond by pressing power button and going to sleep mode and back.
I've noticed some PAM errors in the user.log. (attached) Not sure if they are relevant, but there appear to be in gnome-screensaver.
