Sorry for the multiple comments, but I thought maybe it would just help if I provide all the information that is relevant.
Just before the screen resumes to the password dialog, I get a message at a console saying:- kernel: [ 444.679922] MMC: killing requests for dead queue I can attach the entire log if you want. The problem doesn't occur if I don't have a SD card in the card reader.
