Update:

I added this to my fstab so that my NAS is mounted at boot up/login. I
get a CIFS error message on shutdown but it doesn't seem to affect
anything.

//192.168.1.8/disk  /media/nas  cifs
username=my_username_here,password=my_password_here,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777
0  0

I can read and write to all of my directories just fine and it is
mapped/bookmarked in Places>Removable Media. :)
