Confirm this happens in 8.10, fresh and updated. Can be fixed by setting Audio Source to PulseAudio (in `gnome-sound- properties` OR by `gconftool -t string --set /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosrc pulsesrc`).
Similary, when no pulseaudio daemon is running, alsa works fine (does not set pulse as default pcm).
