Thank you for your comments, I've forwarded the issue upstream: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=340864. It looks like the common point is that you don't have a /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom. Do you know how that happened since it's supposed to be shipped by the package? Removing it doesn't trigger the issue on my box, gdmsetup recreates one when started
