I did a mv ~/.local ~/.local-old and logged out and back in, and the places bar works correctly now. So it's definitely something being changed in ~/.local
After switching the directory back and relogging in, I noticed that: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.local/share/applications$ more mimeapps.list [Added Associations] application/x-extension-conf=gedit.desktop; application/x-extension-tc=Truecrypt.desktop;userapp-truecrypt-MIAV9T.desktop;us erapp-truecrypt-GQUU9T.desktop; application/x-extension-img=Truecrypt.desktop; video/x-msvideo=totem.desktop;vlc.desktop; video/x-ms-wmv=vlc.desktop; video/mpeg=vlc.desktop; application/x-bittorrent=userapp-utorrent-OXHCAU.desktop;userapp-utorrent.sh-VZU IAU.desktop; inode/directory=rhythmbox.desktop;audacious.desktop; application/x-shockwave-flash=firefox.desktop; text/plain=gedit.desktop; application/pdf=AdobeReader.desktop; audio/mpeg=audacious.desktop; [Removed Associations] application/x-bittorrent=userapp-wine-U3KPAU.desktop; ----EOF---- I'm presuming the "inode/directory=rhythmbox.desktop;audacious.desktop;" is line the curlprit. Once I removed it, the places bar opens correctly now. The question is how it got there, and why after doing a distribution upgrade.
