I realized today that this no longer happens to me. Totem is working fine now and, despite my best efforts, I can't figure out why. My version of libxine-main1 is still 1.1.1+ubuntu2-6 . So that does not seem to be the culprit.
Only thing I did recently is install the all-20050412.tar.bz2 codecs from mplayer's website. I had previously been using a .deb of the w32codecs: w32codecs_20050412-0.0_i386.deb . However, since I discovered totem was working again I got rid of the all-codecs from mplayers website and put back the w32codecs. And it still worked. Barrakketh, if you can confirm that it is now working for you too, I think we can consider this bug resolved.
