this was a one part of me half moving back to windows for my primary
desktop. In windows the issues are so bad and widespread that its easy
to google how to turn them off while in ubuntu they are only now
creeping in, and therefore people have not gotten around them yet. its
like how Firefox broke the web with the new ssl bulls**t. you should
tell users recommendations and with update, have easy auto updates, But
there should definitely be a way to turn off all OS messages telling
users what to do, and ways to dismiss messages such as the restart now
(after you have restarted X to get new video drivers) when such
instructions can then even be wrong.

Note i still use ubuntu in multiple vms and it is generally good but im
afraid, seeing how firefox is becoming corrupted. It should *definitely*
*not* go the way of microsoft---put that type of stuff in the
documentation, have a quality tutorial, maybe allow users to turn on a
verbose -help me!- mode, but *never ever* force knowledgeable users to
stoop to the level of the least common denominator or your most
knowledgeable users will start thinking of turning the -next- friendly
distribution.
