maybe not the directory, but the config file. probably the same reason, why GDK_PIXBUF_MODULE_FILE and GTK_IM_MODULE_FILE exist. Needed to execute 32bit libs on amd64 and ia64. while on amd64 the use of uname allows selection of the correct location, calling uname for 32bit binaries on ia64 results in i386 as well.
