Well, seems like I 'solved' the problem by deleting the entire top panel and re-creating it from scratch. After logging out and back in again, the notification area worked as normal again. Of course, this is just a workaround and not a real solution to whatever was causing this problem.
I'll close this 'bug' for now and re-open it when I experience this problem again (why isn't there a 'closed' option in the status dropdown menu?
