Public bug reported:

This problem started about a week ago and occurs often, but not always:

When logging into Gnome, the notification area doesn't load any applet
icons into the area where they are supposed to appear, but instead these
applets appear on the desktop like 'ordinary' applications.

See the attached screenshot for an example.

Logging out and back in doesn't seem to solve the problem, rebooting
sometimes does.

This problem seems to be user-specific, because when I log in using a
different account, the problem doesn't occur. I tried removing and re-
adding the notification area to the upper bar on the problematic
account, but that doesn't solve the problem.

I'm filing this as a bug because naturally, such a problem should never
occur.

Perhaps (probably?) this problem is related to some config setting
having been corrupted somehow, so please tell me which files to attach /
investigate.
