The same problem occured here, and indeed I have smb bookmarks, but after today's hardy-updates it got worse (currently running gvfs 0.2.5 and gnome-panel 1:2.22.2-0ubuntu1.1). strace-ing gnome-panel showed: [0] restart_syscall(<...resuming interrupted call ...>
