I did have a look, and couldn't find a dupe. Bug #248683 that you are referring to was reported by me, and is not the same issue. It deals with an error for non-tar .gz files on Intrepid. This report is about a segfault/error for files with incorrect/no extension, confirmed on Gutsy/Hardy/Intrepid.
