Not sure if this bug is going down a different track from its 'duplicate' 241578?
Just a hint that 241578, as described, worked absolutely fine in the LTS release of Hardy and stopped working after a specific automatic update. It might be worth looking at the changes made in that update - provide that they are not massively different of course.
